A cross-country skiing competition in Auronzo di Cadore: willpower and physical strength are exploited to the maximum as can be seen in the faces disfigured by exertion, in the stubborn desire to find that last, unexpected drop of energy necessary for covering the last meters, making it to the finish and even winning. One athlete is ahead; victory is certain, the finishing line is in sight, but his strength is about to perish. He tries to resist and falls to the ground to recover some energy. One of the spectators has pity on him and tries to help him get up. An act of kindness made in good faith that leads to the inevitable disqualification of the athlete.
