This documentary is dedicated to Luigi Mercantini’s poetry and to the events of the Risorgimento related to it. Particular reference is made to “Spigolatrice di Sapri” and to “Inno di Garibaldi”. Carefully reconstructed with historical accuracy, they relive the tragic expedition in the mountains of Lucania, from the landing of the soldiers to the death of Pisacane. A year after Pisacane’s tragic end, Garibaldi commissioned Mercantini to write an anthem for his volunteers, which was sung for the first time on New Year’s Eve in 1858. In 1860, Garibaldi’s troops, singing Mercantini’s anthem, passed back over the same places that Pisacane’s soldiers had attempted to liberate from Bourbon domination.
